Significance of random neuronal drive

چکیده
E!ectively random "ring occurs frequently in the brain. Random components of neuronal drive are therefore often major in#uences on activity. We describe here how level of drive, inhibitory/excitatory balance, correlation between input streams, EPSP/IPSP characteristics, the nature of the postsynaptic neuron all a!ect pattern and level of "ring, the in#uence often interacting in complex ways. Random "ring might also be instrumental in facilitating synchronized "ring. These factors are possibly important elements of the mechanisms by which some neural networks encode information. Clarifying them might therefore facilitate a deeper understanding of the nature of the neural code. 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Reliability, Precision and the Neuronal Code
Cortical neurons may use a rate code or a spike time code (for review see Shadlen & Newsome (1998)).Aspike-time code is only possible when neural discharge is reliable. The discharge of neurons driven by a constant drive is unreliable, whereas it is reliable when driven by a random fluctuating drive (Mainen & Sejnowski (1995); Cecchi et al (2000)). A neuron driven by a sinusoidal current has a ...
متن کاملQuantal Glutamate Release Is Essential for Reliable Neuronal Encodings in Cerebral Networks
BACKGROUND The neurons and synapses work coordinately to program the brain codes of controlling cognition and behaviors. Spike patterns at the presynaptic neurons regulate synaptic transmission. The quantitative regulations of synapse dynamics in spike encoding at the postsynaptic neurons remain unclear. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS With dual whole-cell recordings at synapse-paired cells in...
متن کاملNdel1 and Reelin Maintain Postnatal CA1 Hippocampus Integrity.
UNLABELLED How the integrity of laminar structures in the postnatal brain is maintained impacts neuronal functions. Ndel1, the mammalian homolog of NuDE from the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, is an atypical microtubule (MT)-associated protein that was initially investigated in the contexts of neurogenesis and neuronal migration. Constitutive knock-out mice for Ndel1 are embryonic let...
متن کاملO3: Pharmacological Modulation of Thalamic KCNQ-Potassium Channels: Insight from Knock-out Mice
The channels belonging to the KCNQ gene family consist of 5 different subtypes, which assemble as pentameric channels. The KCNQ2-5 subunits are highly expressed in the ventrobasal thalamus (VB) where they function primarily as KCNQ2/3 heteromers. They underlie an outward potassium (K+)-current, called M-current (IM), which provides a hyperpolarizing drive, thus regulating neuronal excitability....
متن کاملFRP: A Nonvolatile Memory Research Platform Targeting NAND Flash
In this paper, we introduce the Flash Research Platform (FRP), a non-volatile memory research platform that targets Solid State Storage (SSS) and NAND Flash research. We are developing the FRP because we believe that solid state storage devices such as Solid State Disks (SSDs) will be a ubiquitous persistent storage medium within 5 years for personal computers and servers. Solid state technolog...
